Sai Vrat for Nine Thursdays is becoming popular day by day. Many devotees have been benefited by it and the list goes on increasing day by day. But there are many doubts regarding this vrat. I am receiving mails regarding such doubts from Sai brothers and sisters, so i decided to post them on blog instead of answering to all questions individually. I have tried to club as many questions as i could. Still if any of your questions are unanswered or not covered in this post, you can ask by commenting under the post. Please be noted that i am answering to questions/doubts to the best of my knowledge and experience but leave it to Baba to decide whether they right or wrong. Also please pardon me if any of the answers are wrong. Suggestions and corrections are readily welcomed. I request devotees to post their queries/suggestions/corrections as comments to this post only.

1. Where do I get Sai Vrat Katha book?

Many devotees have got desired fruits from this Vrat. By word of mouth it is becoming very popular and it has won trust of many devotees. Every devotee desiring to do the vrat has this foremost question in his/her mind. Well now a days Sai Vrat Katha book is easily available in shops nearby Sai Baba temples in India. Please be noted that Sai Vrat Katha books are not published by Shirdi Sai Baba Sanshtan. For devotees residing abroad i am uploading scanned copy of Sai Vrat Katha book in English, Hindi and Marathi language. With Baba's grace and blessings Sai sister Charu and her husband have contributed this treasure. My hearty thanks to them.

It will be a valuable service if anybody who is reading this post can contribute scanned copy of Sai Vrat book in other language too. Please comment for the same below.

2. Why should I observe fast if not recommended by Baba?

This question will certainly arise in a devotee's mind who has read Sai Satcharitra. I too agree with the same. But also on the other hand i have experienced miracles by doing this vrat. More than materialistic things for which i started the vrat, i got to see spiritual aspects. It seemed as a chance to me get more close to Baba. It is not unknown that Baba pulls His devotees by fulfilling all their wishes and then make them His forever. I request devotees not to do this Vrat just to test Baba. Only thing needed is full faith on Baba and He is sure to sail us across. In the end i leave it to reader's discretion to observe this fast or not.

3. Who can do this Vrat?

Anyone whether male, female and even children can do this Vrat. Old and Sick persons can avoid it. Still if its devotee's wish to do Vrat, Baba will take fullest care! Devotees of any caste/religion/creed can do Vrat only full faith on Baba is required.

4. Should i start this Vrat from any special day?

There is no such rule. It can be started from any Thursday by taking Baba's name and seeking His help and grace for desire for which the Vrat is taken up.

5. What is the procedure of Vrat?

Sai Baba must be worshipped in morning or in evening. Sai Baba's photograph must be placed on a yellow cloth. Clean the photograph with clear water. Tilak of Chandan (sandalwood) and Kumkum must be applied to the photograph of Sai Baba. Yellow coloured flowers or garland must be offered to Sai Baba, incense sticks and lamp must be lighted and then the main story of the vrat must be read. Sai Baba's name must be remembered and then prasad must be distributed.

6. What else should be read/chanted apart from Vrat story and Sai Baba Arti?

Again there are no hard and fast rules in this. Sai Baba Arti is sufficient, still if you wish you can chant Sai Chalisa and Sai Bavani given in Vrat book.

Click to download Sai Chalisa in Hindi Mp3
Click to download Sai Chalisa in Telugu Mp3
Click to download Sai Baavani in Hindi Mp3

7. What can be given as Prasad?

Prasad may consist of some sweet, dry fruit or fruits.

8. What can be eaten in this Vrat?

Vrat can be done only by eating fruits, sweets or drinking milk, tea or coffee. It can also be done by taking one time meal in evening. It should not be done by not eating anything. A devotee had asked me whether she can eat potatoes, cucumber and tomatoes during this vrat. The answer is yes.

9. Is it compulsory to visit Sai Baba Temple?

No it is not. But it is preferred. If any unavoidable circumstances exist then Baba can be worshipped at home only. Only thing required is full faith!!!

10. Can i do Vrat if i am not at home or when I am travelling?

Yes you can. Baba has not laid any compulsions for worshipping Him. This applies in this Vrat also. Again only thing required is full faith!!!

11. What if i miss any Thursday(s) due to unavoidable circumstances?

That Thursday(s) should be skipped and following Thursday(s) can be considered in counting Nine Thursdays. The same applies for women if they are going through menses.

12. Is it compulsory to conclude Vrat on nineth Thursday?

Yes it is.

13. How Vrat is concluded?

Vrat is concluded by visiting Sai Baba temple on nineth Thursday, feeding five poor people and distributing 5,11 or 21 Sai Vrat Katha books to your friends and relatives to increase Sai Mahima.

14. What if Sai Vrat Katha books are not available for distribution?

As said earlier they are easily available in India. For devotees residing abroad they can mail scanned copies of books. Before giving/sending Sai Vrat Katha books please make sure from the recipient that he/she will do Vrat.

15. What if I cannot feed poor people?

Devotees residing abroad generally face this question. In such cases devotees can request their relatives to feed poor people in India on their behalf. If they wish to do the same themselves then they can keep food articles in any nearby Sai temple and request temple authorities to offer these food articles as prasad. They can also give food donation to any Sai temple or directly to Shirdi Sai Baba Sansthan Easy Donation Facility.

16. What if I reside abroad and cannot do Vrat on Thursday being a working day?

I got a mail asking this question from a lady Sai devotee. Let me first her question with you. She asked, "Dear Hetal, Om Sai Ram. I have done this vrat a year back and had amazing results. Can I ask you a question? We reside in Dubai and for us to do the vrat on Thursdays becomes a bit difficult as our weekends are on Friday/Saturday. Can this vrat be done on any other days, e.g. every Wednesday or Sunday?? Kindly advise. In Baba's yaad."

This is Nine Thursday's Baba's Vrat, so it cannot be done on any other day. The reason is quite logical and i dont think i need to explain. Well, in this case, it can be advised that if the lady cannot do Vrat on Thursdays, being a working day, she do vrat by eating recommended food in point 8 above and take one time meal in evening, thus not being hungry whole day!!! If this also does not work, she can avoid doing Vrat. Baba has never advised fasting in adverse circumstances, she can pray Him whole heartedly to fulfill her wish. It is not true that Baba fulfills wishes and desires of only those who do Vrat.

17. What if there is some tragedy in my family and if i need to do the Vrat?

I received this mail from devotee of Nasik - India

Om Sai Ram Hetal Ji, I want to be a true Sai Devotee and at the holy feet of Baba all the times. I will be very grateful to you if you solve my one query. Unfortunately I have lost my mother in last month on 6th July, 2009. Now from next Thursday (13.08.09) I want to start Sai Vrat of 9 Thursdays. Is it correct to start to the Vrat. My friends are saying to wait for 1 year. But I want to do something for Sai as early as possible. Please tell me a way out. !! Om Sai Ram

After consulting my mother in this regard, i answered as thus:

Since it has been more than one month for the tragedy, the devotee was allowed to do the Vrat and there was no need to wait for one full year. Only the time period to wait is about 13-16 days as per Hindu tradition. For other castes, it depends on their traditions and practices.

18. What can be used if you do not get Kumkum or Sandalpaste?

I received one mail asking the above question. There are no hard and fast rules for Vrat so it is fine if these things are not used.

This list of questions in includable. As and when any new question comes my way, it will be posted here. Please feel free to ask your question and i will try to answer them.

  1. Dear Madam,
I m a bit confused. It is mentioned above to keep the asan & sai photo & do the pooja. But after we finish the pooja we have to remove the asan & sai photo & everything used for pooja on the same day or next day or it should be kept same place until i finish the 9 thursday? Can i use the statue which i have kept in my temple at home or we should use photo which is not being worshipped before? Thank you & Please clear my doubts asap since i want to start this vrat immediately after receiving your response.

  2. Sai Ramji Rakhi ji,

First of all thanks for putting your question here.

After you finish pooja of one particular Thursday, you can remove asan and Sai Babaji photo/idol next day. No need to keep until you finish 9 Thursdays Vrat.

You can use photo/idol kept in temple at your home.

I hope i have cleared your doubts.

If any doubt still persists, please do feel free to comment here.

Since you have consumed egg (although by mistake) you will not be able to count this week's fast in 9 Thursday Vrat. So till date you have completed only 4 weeks (or say 4 Thursdays) and 5 more weeks are pending.

I live in europe and its 4pm now, so at what time i shud do the pooja, after what i cn eat normal indian rotti foor or rotti with achaar?bcoz i dont hav any1 here who can help me ,ive to make sure exact way to open the vrat. Also i have done puja already nce at mring.

  14. Sai Ramji Anonymous ji,

I am again referring point from the post above :

    13. How Vrat is concluded?

Vrat is concluded by visiting Sai Baba temple on nineth Thursday, feeding five poor people and distributing 5, 11 or 21 Sai Vrat Katha books to your friends and relatives to increase Sai Mahima.

So it is not at all compulsory to open your fast by eating anything salty. It solely depends on your wish to eat roti or achar or eat only fruits.

Your earlier vrats are not incomplete because i hope you have followed concluding rituals. I will again say here that Sai Babaji only wants firm faith and patience and there are no hard and fast rules of fasting or anything with regards to His worship. Chanting only "Sai, Sai" will solve your problems and gives fruits of your devotion.

I hope i have cleared your doubts :)

  17. Sai Ramji Mitashi,

I dont think you should do this vrat at this stage. Baba has never asked to keep fast by unnecessarily troubling ourselves. I would only request you to keep faith in Sai Baba for the time being and hope for the best. Once you are physically fit, you may go for fasting but not right now. For observing fast, it is not necessary that you should be an ardent devotee of Sai Baba. I hope what i mean to say. Please take care of yourself and your baby. Baba will do the best for you.

  48. Sai Ramji Raj ji,

Here are answers to your questions in order as they are placed :

    - You and your wife can do pooja in the morning itself. One can read the story and make another listen. In the evening you can do Sai Baba's arti. So need to do pooja individually two times a day.

    - As answered in first point, you both can do the pooja in the morning. Everything can be common, but you can offer flowers again to Baba which is a matter/fact of devotion and not compulsorily a procedure of the vrat.

    - Both of you will have to distribute the books - 5, 7 or 11 your wife will give and another 5, 7 or 11 you will give.

    - Any of the either will do for feeding of the poor. If it is difficult for you to feed the poor on the road, you can make them comfortable in your house. All depends on your convenience and feasibility of circumstances.

    - I am having a bit difficulty in understanding your last question i.e. question no. 5, but i am answering you as i have understood - The Vrat books can be bought on last Thursday to conclude the vrat and no need to buy one for each Thursday. I hope i have answered this question of yours. If not, then please, free to put it again in the comment box. (This applies to other questions too)

The whole wheat cereal I am talking about has the raisins and almonds in it already. Is it ok to have them?

SO I can read Kokika ji's story and proceed to Datta bavani,Sai bavani,Sai chalisa and Sai Ashtothram right. Finally finish off with offering prasad and Arati.

In tne evening,I read other slokas. I dont perform arati in the evening . is that ok?

Thanks for your kind help and support

    ReplyDelete
  52. Jai Sai Ramji Anonymous ji (Comment no: 52),

Referring to the first point, yes it is ok if you have whole wheat cereal which contains raisins and almonds for one time meal during vrat and as said earlier you can have other things excluding wheat cereal at other time of the day since they are permitted food for fasts.

In the morning you can read Kokila ji's story followed by Arti and prasad necessarily.

Other slokas like Datta bavani, Sai bavani, Sai chalisa and Sai Ashtothram can be read out in evening and you can then finally finish off with offering prasad and Arati.

If you are reading other slokas in evening then you should conclude it by arti.

I eat the wheat halwa in the morning after doing the vrat as prasad and distribute it to all people.I keep a little bit in a small silver cup near Baba's picture. I eat that one in the evening so that I dont waste it.But other than this,I do not eat anything else as a meal. Its only fruits and milk. I offer Badam Kheer as prasad also and I would have that.

Hereafter,I will make sure that I eat wheat halwa only once.I did not know that as I thought prasad can be eaten at any time. Is that ok till now as I did this by mistake and did not know.

Also Can I have the wheat halwa prasad and roti/Dal during my one time meal?

Since wheat cereal halwa is not allowed during fasting, i replied to you that you can have it only once during your one time meal. But if it is done mistakenly please ask for forgiveness from Babaji and take care in future. But it does not mean that all your previous vrats are of no use now.

If you wish to have prasad in the morning, then you can offer allowed foods like fruits, dry fruits as prasad in morning and yourself have them too. In the evening, before one time meal, after concluding your slokas and arti, you can offer halwa or anything not necessarily made up of only allowed foods, and have it during your one time meal.

You can have anything in one time meal as per your suitability except non-vegetarian food.

You can give print outs of vrat books in understandable language to your friends. If you go for the other option, there is no need for your parents to do fast, they can feed the poor and distribute vrat books.

  76. Jai Shri Sai Ram hetal ji,

Please answer the following questions regarding what we can eat during the fast:

    1) I am confused. Which of the following is the correct thing to do:

Either we can eat just one vegetarian meal during the whole day or we can have fruits, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumber, milk, coffee etc as many times as we want during the day.

Or we can eat both, a meal in the evening and fruits, potatoes, milk etc. throughout the day?

    2) Is there any limit to how many times we can eat fruit, potatoesetc or drink milk, water etc during the day?

    3) You have mentioned that we can eat potatoes, tomatoes, cucumber anytime during the vrat. Can you also tell me, is it ok if I eat salt and other spices such as cumin, red chili, black pepper, coriander powder etc along with them. For example: Zeera Aloo, Tomato Sabzi, cucumber with salt etc

    4) Can I have lime, lemon juice and green chili along with potatoes, tomatoes and cucumber?

    5) Can I have yogurt (curd) or Buttermilk (Lassie) anytime during the day, if “yes” then can you also answer if I can add salt and black pepper to yogurt or buttermilk?

    Thanks

2)I followed the procedure of pooja in the morning and since I had no idea that we have to again perform pooja in the evening I removed Sai baba's aasan soon after my pooja, also I didnot perform the evening pooja and its night in Singapore now....so is my vrat good?? Can I still perform the pooja for today??

    1) As i was supposed to start the Vrat today the panditji at our place said tat its Adhik Mass going on so i cant start the Vrat but as per the things mentioned in the book that u can start the Vrat from any thursday so i started it because i felt so that i should start so i did. So is it wrong wat i hve done?

    2) While doing the pooja i was supposed to do the 'Vrat Sankalp' I tried my level best to do it properly but i feel that i have made some mistakes for which i have asked forgiveness from Baba. I want to know that if the Sankalp is not done properly then will the Vrat not be successful and can i consider my Vrat started from today?

    3) Me and my cousin sister we both started the Vrat today. Is it ok if we both did the pooja together one one common cloth and one picture of Baba?

Please Hetalji answer my questions as soon as poosible because i am feeling very heavy by thinking about these problems.

Thirdly I take a little off Baba's prasad everyday in the form of chana and sugar candy (that I obtain from mandir) I have been doing this during the 9 fasts also. It was of yellow colour, I dont know whether it was of suji or something else. I ate it by mistake. My question is whether I have to count this prasad as a one time meal or I have to count in allowable things that can be taken during the day. I have read your answers on this blog also. For such like situation, you have answered that your bhakti (shardha) matters and if anything has been eaten by mistake, pray to sai baba for forgiveness.
I am little bit confused. Kindly help me and reply whether I should take meal in the evening as a one time meal or only take fruits/milk so that my vrat is not wasted.

    Please reply by today evening.

  143. I am doing sai vrat. Tommorow will be my 4th Thursday.I have kept 5 books in my temple on first day of vrat,so as to distribute them on 9th thursday. I also thought in mind that i will give these 5 books to my 5 relatives, but if it is not possible to give book to those whom i have thought, can book be given to some other person or can we give book after two three days when we met that person.
If i didn't distribute all the book on my 9th thursday will my fast not be considered completed?

    Sai Ramji,

The vrat books will be given to those whom Sai Baba has decided to give. So dont worry if you have changed your mind to give vrat books to somebody else.

Your vrat will be considered completed only if you do with Shraddha and Saburi.

  146. Hello Hetalji,

I have just started off with Sai Vrat..and have come across with the following doubts...It would be great if you guide me in this regard:

    1) I bought a Sai Vrat Book which is in Hindi...but the stories in this are different from the ones mentioned in your version...So, my quesion is: Is it that we can read any version of stories? or is there an ORIGINAL VRAT KATHA which is to be read?

    2) After reading vrat katha, i read out Sai Chalisa and Sai Leelamrut which was given in that book; I DIDN'T READ THE OTHER SHLOKAS WHICH WAS GIVEN IN THAT BOOK(SAI BHAVANI, DATT BHAVANI AND SAI ASTOTHAR); My question here is, what are the compulsory shlokas we should read out on the Vrat day (other than vrat katha)?

    3) I did pooja, read vrat katha, read sai chalisa and sai leelamrut in the morning. In the evening, i just did Aarati to Saibaba, but i didn't sing the Aarati song...(I didn't know it was compulsory)...I just did the aarati by spelling "Om sai namo namah, sri sai namo namah, jai jai sai namo namah, sadguru sai namo namah"
So, can i count this thursday's vrat or not? IS SAI AARATI compulsory to be sung?

    4) Also is Vrat katha is to be read only one time, right? i.e, suppose we read vrat katha in the morning, evening we can just do the aarati and end up, Right? Or Wrong?

Kindly guide me in this regard...

    Rashmi

    Sai Ramji,

Here are answers to your questions:

    1. As far as i am aware original vrat katha consists of story of a devotee named Kokila. Now that this vrat has become much popular other authors may also be coming up with other stories.

    2. There is no compulsion to read any other slokas.

    3. Chanting arti is also not compulsory, you can play audio of arti too.

    4. You are correct in this case.

First of all thanks a ton on clarifying all the questions that we devotees have. I have a question myself. I started to do Sai vrat for 3 thursdays and then I came to know that I am expecting. In your previous comments you have noted that a pregnant woman should not fast. I have missed about 4 thursdays already without doing the vrat since I feel hungry all the time and also eat a lot outside becoz I'm unable to cook at home. Is it ok if I do start the vrat after I am fully capable of fasting. I hope Sai pardons me. Thanks

I am keeping 101 (hundred and one) vrat. But lately because of some personal family problems, I am not able to concentrate on the vrat very well. Even when I am reading katha, my mind is not stable and in one corner, it’s thinking about other things.

Also I feel that am filled with negativity and hatred right now. I don’t like anything around me. I know Sai Baba will not listen to my prayers if I have such bad vibes towards others and hatred inside me.

I have tried so hard, but I just can’t think positive. Please guide me what should I do.

Should I stop doing vrat? Please help.

    Thanks.

    Sai Ramji,

There is no connection between having negativity in mind and doing vrat. But a common thing is required for both - strong undivided faith in Sai Baba and patience. By only saying this, i presume that your doubt is cleared and you can now yourself decide what you need to do further.

  160. Sai Ramji Dear Sai Readers,

Herewith i am writing a question and my response from a devotee regarding the above vrat:

    Devotee: Dear Hetal Ji,

I want to know that I am doing VRAT of SHIRDI SAI BABA JI> on my 3rd Thirsday I have eaten salt by mistake but I am doing MEETHA vrat. Now pls suggest me whether to count that fast or not. I would also like to know that will Sai Baba Ji accept my vrat and forgive me for this mistake......Pls tell me after menses from which day I should start my vrat and Sai Satcharitra. on very 4th day can I have vrat or not. please answer my doubts.
    OM SAI RAM.....

    My Response: Sai Ramji,

As per my view and method of observing the vrat, salt is not preferred. So please do not count that Thursday.

Please "DO NOT" think that Sai Babaji will not accept your vrat and punish you because it is not done as per the method prescribed. Sai Baba is not happy to see us suffering with hunger, but He Himself is hungry for our love, faith and devotion. So please observe this vrat with the above virtues and not necessarily with prescribed method. Follow the link for more details of Sai Vrat http://www.shirdisaibabastories.org/2009/07/nine-thursdays-sai-baba-vrat-faqs.html

Yes from fourth day of menses itself you can do the vrat.

    OM SAIRAM!

    Hope you are fine.

I read your FAQ's on the subject.

I want to start the Vrat Katha from this Thursday with kind Baba's blessings.

    One query:

You have mentioned, before distributing the Vrat Katha Books, to ensure the recipient is willing to perform the Vrat. How can you ensure this? and honestly, around my surroundings , I come across very few people who are religious and willing to turn towards God path.

Also, I dont want to force anyone with the Vrat. One must be willing to do this him/herself.

In the SaiMandir here, I have also observed people refuse to accept the Vrat Katha Books from those distributing them.

    Please share your views.

    1. in the one time meal i eat kuttu ki atta and aloo sabzi cooked in rock salt. does it have to be cooked in rock salt or can it be cooked in normal salt?
    2. does the one time meal have to be same food eat on the first thursday on all the 9 thursdays or can it vary as I travel from time to time.
    3. the people i distribute the books to on the 9th thursday what if they dont follow the fast will that affect my vrat. i cant insure whether they will fast or not. in such a situation what do i do.

    i am a bit confused. in the vrat katha it clearly says vrat can be done by taking food in form of fruits, sweets and drinking tea coffee milk or take food only once. So please tell me does this mean;
    1. we can only eat fruit milk tea coffee sweets all day
    2. eat only one meal and nothing in between
    3. drink tea, coffee, milk, eat fruit, sweet all day and have one veg meal
please tell me if the third option can be followed as well cause from what i understand in the katha it is not an option. Als can the quantities be different and the one meal be different foods or does it have to be the same on every thursday.
